How to create a stylish outdoor space for summer

Hi everyone & taaa daaa!

May I present the first installment of quick home styling videos with the fabulous Cherie Jones of Cherie Jones Design ūü§©

Given that most of us will spend the summer in our homes this year, you may want to turn your outdoor space, no matter how tiny or large, into a stylish oasis for the season. Small changes can make a huge difference to the mood and feel of a place.

Please let me know what other areas in your home you’d like us to tackle in future videos.

Corn fritters

I love fritters. In any shape and form. These ones feature quite frequently on our weekend brunch menu:

1 egg
1 tbsp water
125g flour
1 tsp baking powder
pinch of salt and pepper
1 can (410g) creamed corn
2-3 tbsp vegetable oil

  • Lightly beat egg with the¬†water.
  • Sift in flour and baking powder, add salt and pepper and stir to achieve a medium batter (add more¬†water if needed). Make sure the mixture is not too thin.
  • Add the can of cream corn, season and stir.
  • Heat half the oil in a frying pan to a medium heat and add spoonfuls of the batter in the pan.
  • Flip the fritters when they start to bubble on the top (1-2 min),¬†but test they are cooked through before removing them.
  • You may need to add a little more oil after each lot is taken out of the pan.

I like to serve the fritters with cherry tomatoes, avocados, sour cream & Thai sweet chilli sauce.

My first EVER dedicated summer collection

When I first started Turquoise Port, my mission was to bring beautiful handcrafted items from other parts of Asia to Tokyo. There are so many talented artists and artisans all over this mesmerizing continent creating modern Asian items which are usually not detected by tourists and travellers in those respective countries.

I never set out to create dedicated collections and now, less than two years into the journey, I have done just that!

My first ever summer collection features a range textiles in soft colors such raw cotton blankets and macrame cushion covers as well as handwoven baskets, placemats and fun decorative objects. I am soooo excited to share them with you!

Getting closer

Remember the Bikudesigns x Turquoise Port creative collaboration we keep talking about? Well today you can see some of the limited edition items in close-up that will be launched VERY soon.

The Meera clutch is made by hand in India from a combination of gold rattan, hand-embroidery and hand-beading. Inside there is a nifty little detachable antique bronze chain making this a perfect little bag for a brunch or evening cocktails. It’s so easy to dress up or down depending on the event.

The Musubime cuff is so light and easy to wear that you won’t even know it’s there. Made from a turquoise vintage iro-muji kimono, the bracelet gives you a little hint of the matchy-matchy with the Meera clutch, without overdoing it.

Creative collaboration update

A couple of days ago Victoria from Bikudesigns and I launched our creative collaboration project and cheekily didn’t show you the items we have been working on. So here they are on an actual person, on a street in Tokyo. All of the jewellery pieces are made from a single turquoise iro-muji vintage kimono.

Our collection comprises of:
Meera clutch-hand embroidered and beaded with a chain strap
Harisashi stud earrings
Saya dangle earring
Saya fabric pendant on a chain (long or short)
Musubime neckpiece
Musibime bracelet

Launch day is fast approaching so make sure you are firmly in the loop to hear about when and how you can get your hands on these limited edition pieces.

Thank you to our amazing models:

Collaboration unveiled!

Victoria Close from Bikudesigns and I have been working furiously behind the scenes since 2018 to design a creative collaboration of bags and jewellery.

This was the first time either of us had worked with another business, planned and creatively directed a photo shoot with a professional photographer or launched a joint campaign. To say it was a steep learning curve is somewhat of an understatement.

Thanks so much to our fantastic models and photographer who worked all day to create the look and feel we wanted.  They were all so patient with us newbies.

New products arrived!

I love traveling to far-flung places to source new products, meet with existing suppliers to look at their new creations and place orders. It is an exhilarating part of running Turquoise Port. Sometimes is takes ages before my new orders arrive in Tokyo. This is partly due to all of Turquoise Port’s products being handmade by skilled artisans and creators as well the long journey from their countries of origin to the Showroom.¬†

In some cases months pass before I can lay eyes on the items I selected. Once my orders finally arrive on my doorstep, I open the crates and boxes with nervous excitement.
Are the items as I remembered them? Has the whole order made it in one piece (a huge box of hand-painted ceramics once arrived shattered into bits and pieces…)? Are the colours and shapes of the products the way I ordered them?

Some orders have recently arrived and are ready to be released into the Showroom Рhome decoration and accessories with quite a few one-off items!

Subscribers to my mailing list will be the first to find out and will have first dibs too! The release email will go out to my mailing list on Friday, 22nd February. All items that are not snapped up by my subscribers will be released via Facebook and Instagram on Tuesday, 26th February.
