Our New Deck: A Dream Come True at the Lil House in Germany

The Planning and Building Process

I’m so excited to share that our lil house in Germany now has a deck! It’s something we commissioned at a previous visit and it was built while we were away. Getting things done from afar can be a bit of a challenge, but luckily, my parents live right next door and were able to keep an eye on things. Plus, the plan I submitted to the carpenter was bulletproof and we worked with a true professional.

Transforming Our Living Space

This deck has truly transformed our lil house. It essentially doubles our living space during the warmer months, making the most of those large glass doors leading from the bedroom and living area straight into the outdoors. The deck splits into two parts: a smaller, more private section around the side of the house and a larger, more exposed section at the front.

The front side of the deck features a deeper than usual step. I call it a “sitting step” as I had envisaged people sitting on it when we host casual get-togethers. And let me tell you: it works! At our first gathering with friends and family those stairs fulfilled their purpose!

Our Private Sanctuary

The side part of deck is our little sanctuary, a perfect spot for morning coffee or getting some work done without being seen from the road. We’ve set up a small round café-style table and two chairs there—just enough for a cosy retreat. It’s tucked away, so we can enjoy some peace and quiet while still being outside.

The Front Deck: A Space for Gathering

The front part of the deck, though, is where the magic happens in the evenings. Given that our village is pretty quiet later in the day, with not much foot or car traffic, this area is perfect for spending time with friends and family. We’ve already had BBQs and there’s nothing quite like watching the stars from there. I didn’t want a formal dining space out there; instead, I wanted it to feel relaxed and inviting. We don’t have a ton of storage for outdoor furniture anyway and we can always bring the table and chairs from inside if needed.

Adding Colour and Texture

When it came to furnishing the deck, I knew I wanted something colourful and playful. It took a while to source the right pieces because, honestly, there’s just so much plain and rigid outdoor furniture out there. Why?? Being outdoors should be fun, especially when you live in a place with four seasons! So, I went all in with colour, fun and texture. Playing it safe has never been my style and I’m glad I took the plunge.

To soften the space and add even more texture, I used textiles and added storm lights with candles for those evenings under the stars. The end result? A space that feels both lively and comfortable. We’ve already spent countless hours out there during our last visit and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Our new deck has truly become the heart of our lil house in Germany.
