Exploring Auckland: My Favourite Spots

Advertisements

Auckland is a city full of charm and natural beauty, and over time, I’ve discovered a few favourite spots that I keep returning to. Whether it’s for a relaxed weekend outing or to show visitors around, these places always manage to impress.

Mount Eden

One of my absolute favourite spots in Auckland is Mount Eden. There’s something truly special about heading up to this extinct volcano and taking in the panoramic views of the city. You can see the entire skyline and it’s a reminder that Auckland is uniquely built on a series of volcanoes. There’s a sense of history here too, as this was once the site of a Māori settlement. Every visit offers a new perspective and it’s a perfect spot for soaking in the beauty of the city.

Chelsea Sugar Factory

The Chelsea Sugar Factory is another gem that I love visiting. Come for the views, stay for the cake—this place has some of the best views across the water to the Auckland skyline and the Harbour Bridge. The café here serves up delicious treats and it’s a wonderful spot to relax with a cup of coffee and something sweet (or savoury). Beyond the café, the factory also offers baking workshops and tours of the sugar factory, which are both fun and educational.

Tamaki Drive

Tamaki Drive is, without a doubt, one of my favourite stretches of road in Auckland. Overlooking the glistening waters, it’s a drive that’s captured my heart from the very first time I experienced it. Mr M, who’s a New Zealander, introduced me to this road when I first moved to New Zealand and I was instantly smitten. We’re lucky enough to live in a suburb close to the end of Tamaki Drive, so we get to enjoy this scenic route regularly.

There’s so much to do along Tamaki Drive. Start with a visit to Sea Life Kelly Tarlton’s Aquarium to say hello to the fish and penguins. Then, drive up to Bastion Point for incredible views. Mission Bay is a must-stop for some ice cream—my top pick is Island Gelato. If you’re after a quieter spot, head to Kohimarama and grab a coffee at Café Kohi. A stroll along the beach here is always lovely. Finally, make your way to St Heliers, grab some fish and chips, and enjoy them picnic style in Glover Park with the ocean as your backdrop. Wrap up the day with a cold drink at one of my favourite spots: Porch Bar & Eatery or St Heliers Bay Bistro.

Auckland Art Gallery

The Auckland Art Gallery is a true cultural gem in the heart of the city. It boasts the largest collection of national and international art in New Zealand, with works ranging from historic to contemporary pieces.
I love wandering through its diverse exhibitions, which often showcase both well-known artists and emerging talents. The gallery also hosts a variety of events, talks and workshops, making it a vibrant hub for art lovers. Whether you’re an art aficionado or just looking for a peaceful retreat in the city, the Auckland Art Gallery offers something for everyone.

Auckland Museum

The Auckland Museum, set in the beautiful Auckland Domain, is a must-visit for anyone interested in New Zealand’s history and culture. Housed in a grand neoclassical building, the museum features a diverse collection, including Māori and Pacific Island culture, natural history, and military exhibits. It also offers deep insights into New Zealand’s role in global conflicts, with moving displays that honour the nation’s servicemen and women. Whether you’re a history buff or simply curious, the Auckland Museum offers a rich, educational experience worth exploring.

Discovering Auckland’s Civic Theatre

If you’re into history and architecture, you won’t want to miss the Auckland Civic Theatre. This theatre is a journey through history and opulence and its interiors are dazzling. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re exploring Auckland’s cultural side. Note that you’ll need to book a tour to explore the building.

A Little Further Afield: Waiheke Island

For those willing to venture a bit further, Waiheke Island is a spot we love and have visited many times. It’s a little slice of paradise just a ferry ride away from the city. Whether you’re into wine tasting, beach hopping or exploring the island’s art scene, Waiheke has something for everyone.

These are just a few of the spots that make Auckland such a special place to live and explore. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, I hope you get a chance to enjoy these beautiful locations as much as I do.
