You know that perfectly shaped volcanic cone you can see from just about anywhere in Auckland? That’s Rangitoto — and if you haven’t been yet, it’s absolutely worth the ferry ride and the climb.
Rangitoto is the youngest and largest of all the volcanoes in the Auckland volcanic field and it’s become something of the city’s icon. It popped up out of the sea around 600 years ago — which, geologically speaking, makes it a baby.
The island is uninhabited and a protected scenic reserve with heaps of native bush, fascinating geology and panoramic views that’ll knock your hiking socks off.
The Perfect Day Trip from Auckland
If you’re in Auckland and fancy a bit of nature without needing a whole weekend, Rangitoto is the answer. You just hop on the ferry in the morning, climb to the top, soak up those epic views and head back in the afternoon. Easy! It’s a pretty ride across the harbour — and you get great views of the city from the water too.
So… how hard is the hike?
The walk to the summit is about 1 hour each way (give or take) and while it’s uphill, it’s not a punishing climb. The paths are well maintained and there’s a good mix of shaded areas and open lava fields. If you’re reasonably fit, you’ll be just fine. Just pace yourself — and bring plenty of water.
Once you reach the top, the reward is well worth the effort: sweeping views over the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland’s skyline, and even out to other islands like Motutapu and Waiheke. It’s one of the best vantage points in the region.
A few practical things to know
- Bring all your supplies — there are no shops, no cafés, not even a coffee cart. What you pack is what you’ve got.
- Good shoes are a must — the volcanic rock is sharp and uneven in places.
- Don’t forget sun protection — not all of the trail is shaded, so sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses go a long way.
- There’s no rubbish disposal — so carry everything out with you.
Exploring Rangitoto is a brilliant day out. You’ll feel miles away from the city — even though you can still see the Sky Tower from the summit.
