Just a short drive north of Auckland, Matakana feels like a world away—in the best possible way. It’s the kind of place where you can hop in the car on a Saturday morning and be sipping coffee at a farmers market within the hour or plan a slow, meandering weekend filled with food, art and fresh country air.
This little town punches well above its weight. Think vineyards, boutique shops, coastal walks and some seriously good eating. If you haven’t yet carved out time to explore Matakana properly, consider this your sign.
Start With the Saturday Farmers Market
If you’re heading up on a Saturday, the Matakana Farmers Market is an absolute must. Go hungry—seriously. There’s everything from fresh pastries and crepes to handmade sausages, locally roasted coffee, oysters and lush seasonal produce. It’s all set beside the river, with live music playing and a real community buzz. And while it’s a favourite of Aucklanders escaping the city, it still feels wonderfully local. You’ll spot everything from organic honey to award-winning cheese, olive oil and artisanal relishes—perfect for stocking the fridge back home or putting together a picnic on the go.
Explore the Village Square
After the market, wander into the little town square just behind. It’s one of my favourite pockets of Matakana—charming and thoughtfully curated. There’s a brilliant bookshop (the kind where you always find something you didn’t know you needed), art and homeware boutiques and an interiors store that’s a bit dangerous if you’re in the mood to redecorate. Don’t miss Honest Chocolat for handmade treats—ideal if you’ve got gifts to buy (or just feel like spoiling yourself). If you’re ready for lunch, Market Kitchen is right there, with a menu that celebrates the region’s seasonal produce and a view over the river.
Art, Pottery and Local Brews
If you’ve got time to venture further, there’s plenty to fill the afternoon. Morris & James Pottery is a Matakana institution, tucked just a minute or two out of town. Their colourful ceramics are unmistakable.

For something creative and unexpected, head to Sculptureum—part sculpture park, part gallery and full of surprises. The gardens are filled with art from all over the world and the on-site restaurant Rothko is absolutely worth a booking.

Beer lovers are spoiled for choice, too. 8 Wired Barrelworks is a relaxed, rustic space for trying wild-fermented and barrel-aged brews, while Sawmill Brewery just down the road is a long-time favourite. Their Smoko Room serves up beautifully crafted plates that are just the right mix of refined and hearty—ideal for lunch, dinner or something in between.
For Nature Lovers: Tāwharanui Regional Park
If you’ve got a bit of time (or you’re staying the night), Tāwharanui Regional Park is a no-brainer. White sand beaches, rolling hills, native bush and birdlife galore. It’s part open sanctuary, part beach daydream—and if you’re lucky (or patient), you might even hear kiwi at dusk. Bring walking shoes, your swimming clothes and a picnic if you’re organised.

Walk the Sands at Omaha Beach
For something a little more laid-back but no less lovely, take a stroll along Omaha Beach. It’s wide, golden and often blissfully quiet outside peak summer. Perfect for a barefoot wander or a quick swim if the weather’s playing nice. If you’re into architecture, the beachfront houses are half the fun—some sleek, modern marvels, others classic Kiwi baches dialled up to luxury mode. It’s very Omaha and very easy to imagine never leaving.
Treat Yourself at Charlies Gelato
And finally—no trip to Matakana is complete without a stop at Charlies Gelato. Just outside of town, it’s the kind of place where you’ll want to try five flavours but somehow settle on two (or three). Sit in the garden, take a breath and pretend you’re on holiday in Italy for a moment.
A Day (or Weekend) Trip to Matakana – Final Thoughts
Whether you’re zipping up for the day or stretching things out for a lazy weekend, Matakana delivers every time. It’s a little bit arty, a little bit foodie, a little bit wild—and all kinds of relaxing. Go on—make a plan. Oh and check this if you’re looking for a unique place to stay.
