Most people seem to head west when it comes to Auckland day trips — chasing those wild black-sand beaches, dramatic cliffs and big surf. And don’t get me wrong, they’re stunning. But East Auckland has its own kind of charm — softer, greener, quieter. Think rolling countryside, sheltered bays perfect for swimming (no dramatic surf here, thank you very much), cute little towns, waterfalls and wide sea views.
If you haven’t ventured east in a while, here’s how to spend a lovely Sunday out that way — farmers market, forest walks and a few good coffee stops along the way.
First stop: Clevedon Farmers Market (Sunday)
Set your alarm and head out to Clevedon Farmers Market, which kicks off at 8am every Sunday. It’s a proper country market — local produce, handmade goodies, plants, baking and excellent coffee. You’ll find all sorts of breakfast-y treats too: think crepes, pastries, bacon butties and maybe even a fresh juice to make yourself feel a bit virtuous.
The vibe is relaxed, a mix of locals and Aucklanders doing their weekend pilgrimage. Bring a basket or a bag — chances are you’ll leave with more than just breakfast.

Explore Clevedon
While you’re there, have a wander around Clevedon village. It’s small, but there are a few charming shops to pop into — local homewares, plants and often a pop-up or two.
Don’t miss the Clevedon Art Trail, a loose collection of galleries and studios showcasing local artists. A great one to start with is Art Industry on the main street. You’ll find beautiful ceramics, paintings, sculptures — much of it inspired by the surrounding landscapes.

Stretch your legs at Hunua Falls
Just 15 minutes from Clevedon are the Hunua Ranges, home to some of Auckland’s best bush walks. If you’re after a quick nature fix, head to Hunua Falls — it’s only a 15 minute walk from the carpark to the waterfall and it’s a lovely, easy track. Very photogenic too, especially after a bit of rain.
If you’re feeling like walking off your farmers market breakfast, there are several longer tracks nearby. The Cossey-Massey Loop (around 2.5h) is a good one — native bush, birdsong and not too many people.

Coastal drive and a swim
From there, I’d suggest heading towards the coast. The drive from Clevedon out to the water is gorgeous — all farmland and pohutukawa-lined roads. Duder Regional Park is a brilliant spot for another walk — there’s a loop track that gives you beautiful views over the Hauraki Gulf. Bring your swimming gear if it’s warm; the beaches around East Auckland are calm and great for swimming.
Keep going and you’ll hit Maraetai Beach, where you can stop for an ice cream, go for a dip or just sit and watch the world go by. There are a couple of casual places to eat here too if you’re peckish again (I mean… it’s been a few hours since the market) before heading back into town.

So there you go — East Auckland in a day
No black sand, no big waves, no surfers in sight — just peaceful beaches, bush walks, a bit of culture and plenty of good food. Sometimes it’s the quieter corners that surprise you the most.
