I love a good bar. Always have, really. But while my younger years were all about getting tipsy on whatever was cheapest (usually something awful), these days I appreciate a more grown-up kind of place — the sort of bar where you can actually hear your own voice, the drinks are crafted not poured and the atmosphere has a bit of a story to it.
Auckland’s bar scene is full of little gems like that — tucked away, thoughtful, and just the right amount of quirky. Here are some of my favourite bars in downtown Auckland:
Caretaker
Hidden down a staircase in Britomart, Caretaker is all about bespoke cocktails. You won’t find a drinks menu here — just tell the bartender what you like and they’ll create something just for you. It always feels a bit magic.

Ground Wine Bar
Right in the heart of the city but somehow feels off the radar. This intimate wine bar has a cracking selection and a sommelier who genuinely loves to help you discover something new. One of those places you always leave a bit happier.

House Bar at Hotel DeBrett
An absolute gem. Tucked inside the boutique Hotel DeBrett, this art deco-inspired bar is elegant and cosy, with vintage charm and a relaxed vibe. It feels like a little secret — in the best way.
Kemuri HiFi
Walking into Kemuri HiFi feels like stepping into a swanky Tokyo bar — in the best possible way. Think moody lighting, great cocktails and proper vinyl tunes playing all night. It’s cool without being try-hard and a firm favourite when I want something a bit different.

Little Culprit
Small, cheeky and packed with personality. Little Culprit’s miso negroni is one of the most memorable drinks I’ve had in Auckland — and that’s saying something. A great choice if you want cocktails with a twist.
The Nightcar
Bold, slightly bonkers and very cool. Think Austin Powers meets speakeasy — plush interiors, retro touches and seriously good drinks. The Nightcar is great for a late-night tipple when you’re feeling a bit playful.

Queens Rooftop
Probably the fanciest rooftop bar in Auckland, with a slick fit-out and stunning views across the harbour. Queens Rooftop feels a little bit New York, a little bit Sydney and very much like the place to kick off a special night.

Somm
Wine lovers, this one’s for you. Somm is stylish and relaxed with an excellent wine list and knowledgeable staff. The perfect spot for a proper catch-up over a beautiful glass (or two) of something interesting.
So if you’re after a grown-up night out in Auckland — somewhere with a good drink, a bit of style and where you won’t have to yell over the music — these are my go-tos. Cheers to the adult version of going out — it’s so much better.
