Board the Pelorus Mail Boat in the small town of Havelock, on top of New Zealand’s South Island to visit remote communities in New Zealand only accessible by boat.
Living in a big city, it’s easy to forget how remote some people in New Zealand live their lives. Recently, we had the opportunity to join the Pelorus Mail Boat, which has been operating for more than a century. The boat delivers mail, parcels, groceries and supplies to the most remote parts of the Marlborough Sounds/Pelorus Sound.
Moreover, some of these places are only accessible by boat; there are no roads and very few people, some of whom came to meet our boat.
The Pelorus Mail Boat Cruise offers a magical journey through the pristine waters of Pelorus Sound in New Zealand’s Marlborough Sounds. For over a century, the mail boat has been a lifeline for remote communities along the Pelorus Sound. Today it gives passengers a glimpse into the lives of those who call these secluded bays and inlets home.
