Cooking is my happy place and I’ve found that the right tools make a world of difference. I love having a well-equipped kitchen and over the years, I’ve honed in on a few essential kitchen tools that I simply can’t do without. Here are my top favourites, each of which plays a crucial role in my cooking & baking adventures:
1. Microplane Zester
This little gadget is a powerhouse when it comes to adding a burst of flavour. It’s perfect for finely grating citrus zest, nutmeg, garlic, ginger and even Parmesan cheese. There’s something incredibly satisfying about watching a fine shower of zest fall gently over a dish, instantly elevating the aroma and taste. A good zester makes a real difference; it’s sharp, efficient, and easy to clean, making it a top choice in my kitchen.
2. Mandolin Slicer
A mandolin makes quick work of slicing vegetables wafer-thin, whether it’s for a slaw, a salad or a gratin. It’s a great time-saver and ensures perfect consistency, which isn’t always easy to achieve with a knife. Admittedly, it’s a bit intimidating at first (I’ve had my share of knicks), but a good pair of cut-resistant gloves makes all the difference. I find it especially handy for paper-thin cucumbers or evenly sliced potatoes for a gratin.
3. Japanese Knives
Japanese knives are a must-have for their precision, balance and razor-sharp blades. They’re simply the best for making clean, precise cuts and I love how they feel in hand—light yet sturdy. Out of all the kitchen tools I have, these knives require the most care. Keeping them sharp with a whetstone is key which is a job I’ve outsourced to Mr M 😉.
4. Cast Iron Skillet
Ah, the cast iron skillet. It’s probably the most versatile pan I own. I use it for everything from searing cuts of meat to making frittatas. It holds heat like no other, making it perfect for getting that beautiful, crispy crust on meats and veggies. I also love that I can take it from hob to oven without having to worry about heat resistance and melting plastic handles. The best part is that it gets better with age as it builds up a natural non-stick seasoning.
5. Tiny Frying Pan
This might sound a bit quirky, but I absolutely love my tiny frying pan. It’s perfect for those solo fried eggs, toasting spices or melting a bit of butter. Sometimes you just don’t need a big pan and this one is the ideal size for small, everyday tasks. Plus, it’s a breeze to clean, which is always a win.
6. KitchenAid Stand Mixer
A KitchenAid stand mixer is a game-changer for baking and so much more. I use mine for kneading dough, whipping cream, making batters and even mixing meatballs. It’s a real workhorse that can handle anything you throw at it and with all the available attachments, it becomes even more versatile. Plus, the splash of colour (mine is turquoise!) it adds to the kitchen is a nice bonus!
7. Dutch Oven
A Dutch oven is indispensable for making hearty soups, slow-cooked meats and crusty bread. Its thick, heavy bottom distributes heat evenly, allowing for a slow, steady cooking process. I love starting a recipe on the stovetop and finishing it off in the oven—all in one pot.
8. Handheld Blender
For soups, sauces and even smoothies, a handheld (or immersion) blender is my go-to. It’s much more convenient than transferring hot soups into a blender and has become my trusty tool for all sorts of little cooking tasks. It’s compact, easy to use and a dream to clean.
These are the kitchen tools I find myself reaching for every day, and each one has earned its place in my kitchen through years of loyal service. Do you have any kitchen essentials you can’t do without? Let me know—I’m always keen to hear about a new gadget or tool!
