Airplane wing above clouds

Spending hours in the air can be daunting, particularly if, like me, you usually fly economy. However, with the right mindset and a bit of preparation, you can make the experience far more manageable—and even enjoyable. In this guide, I’ll share my top tips for surviving a long haul flight, focusing on comfort, self-care, and staying active. If you’re travelling with kids, you most likely need a different approach, but for adult travellers, these strategies can make a world of difference.

Mindset: The Power of Perspective

When it comes to long haul flights, your mindset is everything. If you board the plane dreading the hours ahead, the journey will inevitably feel longer and more arduous. Instead, I like to think of the flight as a rare opportunity to disconnect. No notifications, no emails—just uninterrupted time to relax. This shift in perspective can transform the experience from something to endure into something to enjoy.

Pre-Departure: Preparing Your Body and Mind

Before you even step foot on the plane, it’s important to prepare your body for the long journey ahead. If time permits, I recommend fitting in some exercise before you leave. A long walk around the neighbourhood or a quick outdoor workout can help get your blood flowing and fill your lungs with fresh air, making you feel more energised and less restless when you’re seated for hours in economy.

What to Wear: Comfort Over Fashion

Comfort is key when it comes to long haul flights. Gone are the days when I would dress up in my best outfits to board a plane. Now, I opt for comfy drawstring trousers, loose tops, and trainers. A light jacket (I prefer a hoodie) and a scarf are also essentials—perfect for when the cabin temperature drops. I also wear compression socks to prevent my legs from swelling, which can be a common issue during long flights. And when it comes to undergarments, comfort reigns supreme. I’ve swapped out restrictive bras for bralettes, which may not be the most flattering but are infinitely more comfortable for long hours in the air.

Make-Up: Less Is More on Your Long Haul Flight

I avoid wearing make-up on long flights, as my skin tends to dry out in the cabin air, and any make-up I do wear usually ends up smudged after a nap. Instead, I bring a small container of moisturiser in my hand luggage to keep my skin hydrated. I prefer to use night cream as it’s richer than daytime moisturiser. For a quick touch-up before landing, I keep a bit of mascara and a small mirror handy, just to freshen up before arrival.

Accessories: Keep It Simple

As much as I love statement jewellery, I skip it for long haul flights. Even small ear studs can become uncomfortable when trying to sleep, so I keep things simple. Any jewellery I do want to wear upon arrival stays in my hand luggage, ready to pop on when I step off the plane.

Food & Drink: Staying Nourished and Hydrated

Staying hydrated is crucial on long flights, so I always carry a refillable water bottle. The small cups of water handed out by flight attendants are never enough, so I refill my bottle at airports and during stopovers. In-flight, the crew is usually happy to top it up as well.

When it comes to food, I’ve found that ordering vegetarian or vegan meals works best for me. Meat dishes can be heavy and hard to digest, especially when you’re sitting for long periods in economy. I also avoid the bread rolls that often accompany meals—they can leave me feeling bloated. As for alcohol, I steer clear of it now, as it tends to leave me feeling dehydrated and groggy.

Stopovers: Keep Moving & Shower

If your journey includes a stopover, take advantage of the opportunity to move around. Walking through the terminal not only helps stretch your legs but also gets your blood flowing and boosts your energy levels before the next leg of your journey.

My first port of call after stepping off a plane on a longer stopover is to have a shower. Most large airports have facilities that can be used for a fee. Feeling refreshed makes a huge difference for the next leg of the journey.

Post-Departure: Shake Off the Long Haul Flight

Once you’ve arrived at your destination, it’s essential to get moving as soon as possible. A long walk in the fresh air can do wonders for shaking off the stiffness and fatigue of a long flight, helping you to feel more alert and wake.

Surviving a Long Haul Flight doesn’t have to be a Gruelling Experience

With the right mindset, comfortable attire, and a focus on self-care, you can turn a lengthy journey into a chance to relax and recharge. Whether you’re flying solo or with another adult, these tips will help you arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and ready to explore—even if you’re flying economy.
